What is it?

It is a possibility recognised by our social security system.

Workers who have terminated or interrupted their work activity may continue voluntarily with the payment of contributions to finalise their right to a pension and/or increase the amount of their pension (Legislative decree 184/1997 and Legislative Decree 184/1996).

Who is it aimed at?

The service is addressed to:

  • employed or self-employed workers who have interrupted or suspended their activities;
  • persons entitled to invalidity allowance;
  • members of foreign insurance schemes (EU countries and affiliated countries).

How does it work?

The right may be exercised in the case of:

  • interrupted or suspended work due to unpaid leave (private reasons or illness);
  • parental leave for voluntary abstention (time off for breastfeeding, or days of absence due to illness of a child aged between three and eight years);
  • part-time employment contract.${separaTesto}

Voluntary contributions, paid for oneself and for dependent family members, are deductible in the tax return (Unified tax return form or 730 form) with a reduction in taxable income.

The worker may not receive authorisation if they:

  • carry out activities as an employee registered with INPS or with other forms of compulsory social security;
  • receive a personal pension (old age, seniority, incapacity) borne by the Dependent workers’ Pension Fund or other forms of social security;
  • carry out self-employed work registered with INPS (artisan, trader, independent farmer, tenant farmer, sharecropper, co-ordinated and continuous collaborator, project worker, door-to-door salesman, or freelance professional not enrolled in any fund category);
  • are a freelance professional enrolled in a pension fund (engineers, lawyers, doctors, accountants, etc.);
  • receive a personal pension (old age, seniority, incapacity) borne by the aforementioned managements or pension funds.

The claim to INPS must only be submitted online using the dedicated service, by accessing it with one's credentials.

Alternatively, claims can be made by:

  • Contact centre at 803 164 (free from Italian landlines) or +39 06 164 164 from mobile phones.
