What is it?

It is the notification of death that municipal registers and, since 1 January 2015, even medical examiners, must send online.

Within 48 hours of death, they are required:

  • to report it through the channel made available by the Ministry of the Interior;
  • to submit the death certificate to both INPS and the Municipality, adhering to the same submission terms (for medical examiners);
  • to use the dedicated INPS service, in the event of a malfunction of the Ministry's channel.

Who is it aimed at?

Medical examiners and municipal registers.

How does it work?

After receiving a notification of death from the medical examiner, the INPS automatically:

  • identifies the subject in its databases;
  • suspends payment of the pension pending verification of the event by the Municipality.

Other information

Law no. 289 of 27 December 2002 introduced the requirement for municipal registers to transmit online notifications of death to the INPS.
This provision made delivering death certificates in paper form by private citizens to the INPS offices obsolete.

Article 20 of Italian Legislative Decree no. 112 of 25 June 2008, converted, with amendments, into Law no. 133 of 6 August 2008, established that notification must be sent within two days of the event.

Law no. 2 of 28 January 2009 then stated that the sending must occur within 24 hours after the administrative procedure has been concluded.

Lastly, Article 1 of Law no. 190 of 23 December 2014 (Stability Law for 2015) established the obligation for medical examiners to send death certificates to the INPS online within 48 hours of the event, using the same method already in use for the online transmission of sickness certificates.
